# Select a payment method for a cart.

**POST /2026-3/carts/{cartId}/payment-method**

Selects one of the cart's payment methods, freezing the contract it resolves to on the cart's items so subsequent reads and the checkout use the contract's prices. The payment method must be usable. Adding, configuring or removing an item clears the selection again.

### Path parameters

- **cartId** (string(uuid))
  The unique identifier of the cart to select the payment method for.



### Body: application/json (object)

- **paymentMethodId** (string(uuid))
  The unique identifier of the payment method to select for the cart. It must be one of the cart's payment methods and it must be usable.

The payment method was selected for the cart.

### 400
The request parameters are missing or invalid.

### 401
Client authentication failed.

### 403
Missing one or more required scopes.

### 404
The specified cart or payment method was not found.

### 409
The payment method is not usable for the cart, the cart has an ongoing or completed checkout, or the cart is currently being modified.

### 500
An unexpected error occurred.
